Winter Use and Storage

BeeApiary hive scales can remain outdoors and continue taking measurements in winter, or they can be stored without transmitting data. Choose the scenario based on whether you need to monitor the hives during this period.

Operation in Winter

When installed correctly, the scales operate normally outdoors within the temperature range listed in the specifications. Winter measurements help you monitor:

  • weight changes and remaining food reserves;
  • temperature inside and outside the monitored hive;
  • humidity, if the corresponding sensor is installed.

Before winter, inspect the enclosure and protective covers, check the battery charge, and make sure the platform is stable. Do not allow water to enter the enclosure.

Storage Without Data Transmission

If winter measurements are not needed, you do not have to switch off or disassemble the device. To prevent it from consuming battery power and communication credit through unsuccessful attempts to send SMS messages, use one of these methods:

  • remove the SIM card, or press it until it disengages and moves out of its operating position;
  • disable the GSM switch in the additional device settings.

Do not leave an active SIM card without credit or a paid plan in the device. The device can detect the card but cannot determine the account or plan status, so it will continue trying to send SMS messages and consume battery power.

Fully charge the battery before storage. With normal data transmission, one charge may last for 2–3 months. If GSM is disabled in the settings or the SIM card is moved out of its operating position, battery life may exceed six months even at low temperatures. The actual period depends on the condition and type of battery, temperature, and device configuration; check the charge periodically and recharge the device when necessary.

Do Not Remove the Battery for Storage

The device has two intelligent and one electronic level of battery protection. When the charge falls below 20%, it automatically enters a deep power-saving mode and waits to be charged. In this mode, its power consumption is comparable to the battery's self-discharge.

As an estimate, even a 20% charge may provide almost two years of standby time in deep sleep. This is not a guarantee of battery life during regular measurements or data transmission: the battery's condition and type, temperature, and device configuration all affect the result.

Do Not Reverse the Polarity

Do not remove the battery for normal storage or charging. Every reinstallation creates a risk of reversing the polarity and permanently damaging the device. The exceptions are emergency recovery when the voltage is below 3.5 V, or service work performed according to a verified procedure.
